Red Funnel is flying the flag for UK sailing by sponsoring young British sailor Lizzy Foreman for her first Mini Transat race this month.
The ferry firm is supporting 25-year-old Lizzy, who will sail over 4,000 miles single-handedly from Douarnenez in Northern France to Pointe-a-Pitre in Guadeloupe as part of the famous race.
The Mini Transat is a first for Lizzy, who has been sailing since the age of three and has spent a lot of time working in ocean racing campaign management in Cowes. Lizzy is one of three British sailors taking part in the race, which kicks off on 19 September.
Before the Mini Transat in September, Lizzy took part in the Round The Island race, which circumnavigated the Isle of Wight on 27 June and sailed with Red Funnel and Island-based charity UKSA as part of Cowes week in August.
Kevin George, CEO of Red Funnel, said: “Lizzy shows tremendous talent as a young sailor and we’re only too pleased to be supporting her in her first cross-Atlantic race. Lizzy is a rising star for the Island and I won’t be surprised if we see her taking on a round-the-world race before long.”
To qualify for the Mini Transat race Lizzy had to prove herself by undertaking several solo and unassisted passages, including sailing the 2,600 nautical miles between Les Sables in western France, the Azores and back again.
Lizzy said: “I’m really excited for my first Mini Transat race, and to have the backing of a company like Red Funnel means a lot to me. I’ve been sailing solo for a year now and have been training hard for this race so it’s a fantastic opportunity for me to show what I can do.”
