More than 2000 people from across Hampshire visited the Watercress Line over the holidays, to join civilian and military re-enactors and experience the atmosphere of a WWII Christmas on the railway at its popular Christmas Leave event.
Alresford and Alton stations hosted a unique experience, which brought together almost 400 re-enactors and the general public to enjoy live 1940s wartime music and parlour games, steam and seasonal merriment across two days.
Woodies Mountford, Marketing Manager at the Watercress Line, said: “Our Christmas Leave event has always been popular with people from in and around Hampshire, and this year was no different. We were delighted to see so many people at this year's event, some dressed up in 40s attire, others mingling with re-enactors and all embracing the atmosphere at Christmas Leave."
The event gives a flavour of things to come in the summer, when the Watercress Line’s annual War on the Line is set to return on 15-16 June. This year marking the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, War on the Line promises to once again transport visitors back in time to the 1940s, this time to experience the ‘Blitz Spirit’ against the backdrop of a Second World War railway.
