Terence O'Rourke has secured planning approval for the largest hotel investment in Bournemouth for 100 years, the final stage of which, the Hilton Bournemouth, opened this week (15 December).
The Bournemouth and London based planning consultancy secured approval for THAT Group's flagship development, the Terrace Mount Hilton Development, which consists of a top-end Hilton hotel, 120-bedroom Hampton by Hilton hotel, 60 residential apartments and private and public underground parking.
Terence O'Rourke was involved with the planning process in 2007 when approval was granted for a mixed-use development by Redrow Homes, comprising 208 apartments, car parking and food and drink uses. After the site was secured by THAT Group approval was given for a series of revisions, including the introduction of the hotels, updating the building appearance and re-configuring the floorspace. Work was carried out on all three blocks simultaneously on this complex site, which sits alongside listed building terraces and has a significant difference of ground level along its frontage.
Hilton Bournemouth's innovative design pays homage to the art deco and modernist buildings still seen in the town today. Inside, Ray Kelvin, founder of Ted Baker, has exclusively designed bespoke interiors and furnishings for the 173 bedrooms and 15 luxury residential apartments, Sky Bar and restaurant. The eight-storey hotel also offers a spa and a dedicated floor for functions, with eight meeting rooms and one of the biggest ballrooms in Bournemouth.
Hampton by Hilton opened in May and offers 120, mid-priced contemporary rooms. The Summit by Redrow is the final block of the development and consists of 45 luxurious two and three bedroom apartments.
Andrew Elliott, technical director at Terence O'Rourke, said:
The Terrace Mount Hilton Development is distinctive design in a prominent, central location and is a shining example of what is possible with cooperation between stakeholders. Securing the planning approvals to deliver this landmark scheme was a great achievement for the town.
The success of this development is a direct result of the quality of investment that has been made. We have seen this confidence in investment spread throughout Bournemouth since the planning approval was secured and we believe it will continue to do so for years to come.
The Terrace Mount Hilton Development is just one of £100 million worth of building projects Terence O'Rourke has helped get off the ground in Bournemouth town centre in recent years, including Bournemouth University International College and the Citrus Building, a curved mixed-use development of 64 apartments.
