Social Commerce

We saw the rise of mobile commerce, now it is the turn of social commerce. Social networking has become more about business than ever before, with channels looking to monetise. Watch this space.

The use of social media has exploded over the past few years. Facebook has over 750 million users and businesses understand the need to tap into and target this consumer base. But times are changing. Users no longer want to be inundated with irrelevant advertisements and the odd coupon here and there.

They want an experience.

They want to feel valued.

They want to feel important.

Many companies are realising this and are attempting bold new ways to satisfy these consumer needs. Nestle recently entered the social commerce world by launching a their new social marketplace Nestlé Marktplatz, piloted in Germany. This gives consumers the opportunity to browse, purchase and share 72 Nestlé brands.

This new idea also offers consumers an avenue to share their ideas and feel like they have some real involvement in the brand. By encouraging this type of sharing, users are becoming more engaged and are able to communicate with the brand as well as other consumers.

Another breakthrough in this realm of social commerce is that users will be able to purchase items from their social networking sites. NBA have created an online shop within Facebook that allows users to purchase merchandise from their Facebook Store.

Amazon have also created the opportunity for users to send gift cards to their friends on Facebook with the sender posting it on the recipients wall. In times where consumers are always on the go, it is easy to see the appeal in this quick and simple present purchasing route.

Innovative ideas like these mean the lines between business and social networking have become more blurred than ever before. Businesses must put in more effort than an banner ad on Facebook and a few tweets about their latest product and actually present the user with something they can get their teeth into.
