A STAR of the international sailing world will descend upon Cowes in May to officially open RIBEX 2011. Sponsored by Suzuki Marine, the event is the world’s only boat show dedicated solely to rigid inflatable boats (RIBs).
Sailing hero, Pete Goss MBE, will fling open the gates to the Suzuki-sponsored event at Cowes Yacht Haven on May 13.
The renowned yachtsman and offshore championship racer will also use his appearance at RIBEX to tell the public about his latest adventure.
He will announce his key involvement in a major RIB expedition, which will see him make his debut into the world of offshore powerboating.
Pete said: “I’m delighted to be invited to open RIBEX, respected throughout the boating world as THE adventure powerboat show and an event which I’m thrilled to be associated with for the reason it promotes such a thrilling and unique form of boating.
“Opening the three-day event in Cowes ties in beautifully with the public launch of my first involvement in a RIB challenge, which I’m incredibly excited to tell the public about.”
Hugo Montgomery-Swan added: “I feel incredibly honoured that Pete is opening RIBEX this year. It’s not often you get a sailor behind the wheel of a powerboat and I hope Pete’s newfound interest in RIBs will encourage other yachtsmen and women to give it a try.”
Around 80 RIBs are set to be on show at the Yacht Haven and a further 100 visiting RIBs will be moored up. Among the activities on offer are family RIB rides by the RYA and the adrenaline-pumping chance to sit in the navigator seat of a championship RIB and be driven around the Solent by a championship RIB racer.
This year’s show will also feature its own two-day music festival, RIBFEST. Running on the evenings of February 13 and 14, the concert this year is to be sponsored by Skua RIBs.
Entry to RIBEX costs £4.50 for the whole weekend and tickets can be bought at the gates or in advance through ticket south. Tickets to RIBFEST, sponsored by Skua RIBS, which also include free entry to RIBEX for the weekend cost £19.50.
