Scamp Gould and Zebedee Birch-Reynardson are an integral part of the team at the marketing and communications agency, Carswell Gould. As the company's canine companions they are bin inspector, and junior bin inspector respectively and take their jobs very seriously indeed!
Scamp's mum, Managing Director Gill Gould personifies Britain's new approach to business in the 21st century. She's dynamic, feisty and simply bursting with ideas. Because of this she's been able to achieve the perfect balance in her team members, a combination of experience and new talent.
It's essentially a family business though. Gill's son Ed is Creative Director. His instinctive approach is surely a continuing legacy from his parents. His father Roger is senior lecturer in graphic design at the Arts Institute in Bournemouth.
This month Carswell Gould celebrate their twelfth anniversary and moved in March to more modern and spacious premises by the Bargate. Their intention now is to expand the business offering a more extensive range of services to their clients in an ever changing and challenging business environment.
Work hard and have fun is Gill's motto and behind the scenes there are many surprises.
For instance, Gill's Aunt Lisa invented the Wombles!
Aunt Lisa is Elisabeth Beresford, essentially an author of books for children. She was born in Paris and travelled the world extensively with her husband, the BBC sports commentator Max Robertson .
One Christmas , she took her young children for a Boxing Day walk on Wimbledon Common, often referred to as "Wombledon Common". On returning home, she wrote down some ideas and started developing the characters. All of them based, by the way, on members of Gill's family!
And finally, my favourite story about Gill. She's actually been Mrs. Gould not just once, but twice! Sometime after she and Roger parted company Gill was working on a major contract at the London boat show with Ed who was then fourteen. After checking into their hotel they went straight to their room with only enough energy left to collapse for the night! "There's someone in the bathroom Mum" said Ed nervously, and just as Gill turned around a shadowy figure emerged swathed in steam, wearing only a bath-robe! "What the hell are you doing in my room?" they inquired simultaneously, "I checked in four days ago", replied the shadowy figure! As they were later to discover they actually shared not only the same surname but the same initial too. The hotel had checked them both into the same room. After Gill and Ed's hasty retreat to another hotel that evening, Gill subsequently got an apologetic telephone call from the man who was later to become her second husband, George Gould. Not long after George had taken Gill for a drink to make amends, romance blossomed. Ahhh!
