June 11 saw the official opening of the brand new Interpretation Centre at Cardiff Castle and Huw Edwards, the familiar face of BBC News at Ten, was the man to cut the ribbon.
Central to the Interpretation Centre and exhibition is a totally integrated film presentation, produced by DJWillrich Ltd (DJW) which illustrates the links between the city and the castle, showing how each has been dependent on the other for the past 2,000 years.
D J Willrich Ltd is one of the UK's leading Audio-Visual and Multimedia Specialist company, supplying its services to the niche market of Museums and Theme Parks within the Leisure Industry and is run by husband and wife partnership, David and Lynn Willrich.
When DJW was first approached by Cardiff City Council to produce the film, the team realised the overriding challenge was to produce a show without words, which caught the attention and had meaning for all visitors, regardless of language. Eight minutes in length, the film plunges the visitor into the history of the Castle - right from its origins as a Roman Fort in the first century AD, through to the industrial age of Victorian times, when local Welsh labour in the coal mines and the docks funded the castle's extraordinary architectural additions.
Another challenge was the space in which the show is run - it's 12m wide by only 6m deep! The huge projection screen which fills the width of the space is electrically operated, rising at the end of the highly immersive film, to reveal a glazed viewing position showing wonderful views of Cardiff Castle's Norman Keep with views to the Victorian house, former home of the Earl of Bute.
Comments David Willrich: "We were delighted to be involved with such a challenging project and enjoyed every minute. We are thrilled with the outcome and believe that it gives visitors a fantastic start to their tour of the Interpretation Centre and the Castle. We were fortunate to work with a very talented team - Nick Stead, who came up with the story concept, director Bella Johnson, composer David Mitcham and wonderful musicians, the BBC Wales National Orchestra and the Morriston Orpheus Choir."
