REPRESENTATIVES from three Hampshire employers are to meet HRH The Princess Royal next month, when she awards them for their exceptional dedication to training their staff. Bluestar bus company, Razor's Edge barbershop and Southampton City Council's Exchequer Services have all been announced as winners of City Training's (part of City College) employer recognition awards. The awards are part of City Training's annual Apprenticeship Presentation Ceremony, which will be attended by The Princess Royal on April 20.

Bluestar was declared a winner not only for its support to its employees, but also for its support to City Training, as it helped set up City College and City Training's Transport Engineering course. The college had wanted to run the course for some time but the set-up costs were too high. Bluestar was so keen for the college to run the course that it donated a bus, engines, pistons and ticket machine for students to work on and now City College is the only college in the South and outside London to run the course. Bluestar, which has been working with City Training for two years, has encouraged other members of its group, such as Wilts & Dorset and Tourist Coaches, to send its learners to City Training.

Southampton City Council's Exchequor Services department was honoured for its continued commitment to taking on apprentices and helping them with in-house mentors. The department has taken on and supported apprentices with City Training for the last eight years and was bold enough to continue doing so during the difficult time of the reorganisation of its department. The majority of apprentices within the programme go on to become permanent members of staff.

Razor's Edge barbershop in Portsmouth will pick up an award after its owner, Lloyd Hughes, proved his dedication to improving the lives of young people through training. Mr Hughes, who was described as an "extremely supportive employer" has taken on young people who are challenging and given them a fair chance to prove themselves and achieve. One of his apprentices had left school with no GCSE's and was found by City Training to be dyslexic, but with careful guidance and support from Mr Hughes, went on to complete his course early.

David Murley, Director of Employer Engagement and Managing Director of City Training, said: "We work with more than 500 companies in the south, all of whom are worthy winners in their own rights, but these three stood out in particular because of their outstanding dedication to the training of their staff."

City Training's Apprenticeship Presentation Ceremony will also honour up to 200 apprentices aged 16 to 60, who have completed their studies. Special awards will be given to two apprentices who have worked particularly hard.
