Since Google entered the arena of business-targeted social media in November last year, other social media channels have become increasingly concerned that it is giving itself preferential treatment within Google search results.
You may have noticed that Google+ results are starting to appear at the top of your Google search pages and, the way things are heading, this is only going to become more frequent.
A heated exchange was sparked in early January when Twitter and Facebook accused Google of giving itself an unfair advantage by promoting its service despite being less relevant for users.
Whilst we are not going to go discuss details about the ongoing battle, or pass judgement on either side’s position, if you would like to find out more simply ‘Google’ [sic] 'Twitter Google WWE'.
We are, however, going to consider how this might affect you. This incident has significant implications for your website SEO. Google has around a 90% market share of online searches in the UK and if they are weighting their search results, we would recommend you do everything you can to improve your chances of appearing on the first page.
This doesn’t mean you should stop using Facebook and Twitter in favour of Google+, all social media activity will continue to benefit your online presence, but it does mean that Google+ should be integrated into your social media mix to maximise the visibility of your website in Google searches.
