Getting to grips with Facebook timeline for businesses

Marketing

Its rollout for personal users was met with cries of “We fear change!” and people running for the hills.

But when Facebook’s new timeline layout finally became mandatory for business and brand pages at the start of this month we sensed an all-together more positive reaction.

We spent much of March converting our clients’ pages over to the new layout so have been tinkering with the new features for some time now and we have to say we’re impressed.

Here are a few of our favourite new functions which we think will give businesses and marketers a reason to celebrate.

Cover image

You can now have two permanent images to represent your product, service or brand. The new cover photo is a lot more attention grabbing and we’ve been using this to portray the character of our clients through eye-catching photography or graphic design. We’ve then used the traditional ‘profile picture’ slot for corporate logos.

QUICK TIP: We’ll be changing cover photos regularly to keep the page fresh.

Highlighting content

Page owners can now highlight content that they think is most relevant, allowing them to place more emphasis on messages they want to communicate. Some of the content we’ve strategically highlighted on our page includes award wins, complimentary wall posts about our work from clients and videos about great work we’ve done.

QUICK TIP: Don’t go overboard when it comes to highlighting otherwise you’ll lose impact!

Private messaging

Fans of your page can now get in touch with you privately through the message function in the top right hand corner. We believe that it’s better for this communication to take place publicly via the wall because it allows a company to show its willingness to interact with customers - even in cases of negative posts. However, there are users who find it daunting to write on public walls so we welcome anything that encourages interaction from more users.

QUICK TIP: Keep a close eye on this tab - it can be easy to overlook new messages and seem like you’re ignoring customers.

Better insights

Insights are now much more responsive and give data on reach, crowd noise and likes in real time. The beauty of this is you can analyse the response to a post immediately, rather than having to wait a week to see if it has worked.

QUICK TIP: Make use of insights and if your posts are getting a weak response, adapt them until you see results.
