Last week Facebook introduced Graph Search, a handy tool which allows users to search through content. Users will be able to search initially in four categories: people, places, interests and photos.

What is Graph Search?

"Graph Search and web search are very different. Web search is designed to take a set of keywords (for example: “hip hop”) and provide the best possible results that match those keywords. With Graph Search you combine phrases (for example: "my friends in New York who like Jay-Z") to get that set of people, places, photos or other content that's been shared on Facebook. We believe they have very different uses."

Graph Search results will take into account the connections and privacy settings of individual users, so setting your privacy settings will now become paramount. When you search you will only be able to see things you would be able to see elsewhere on Facebook. Users can sign up now and join the waiting list for the beta version.

Graph Search could significantly change the way your customers search. For instance, if someone searches for cafes in Southampton my friends have been to and your cafe has no Facebook presence, you have no chance of appearing even if your cafe is the most marvelous one in town with a five star rating.

Graph Search will also enable businesses to identify potential customers and delve deeper into the customer’s persona, making it easier to target new and potential customers.

Getting ‘likes’ may become more important too, as Facebook uses these to determine rankings. Our top tips for businesses would be to stay on top of your page, keep your details up to date, make sure your content is fresh and relevant and keep talking to your fans.
