Eastleigh Museum will delve into a unique photographic archive at the free exhibition, 'Aerofilms: Britain From Above', running from November 14 to January 16.
The exhibition showcases aerial images dating from 1919 to 1953 from the Aerofilms Collection which is part of Historic England’s Archive. The 37 images record the ever-changing face of Britain's towns, villages and landscapes throughout the 20th century. It also features a special selection of aerial images of historic Eastleigh.
Aerofilms Ltd was the world's first commercial firm of aerial photography and its founders, Claude Grahame-White and Francis Lewis Wills were pioneers of the air. Spurred on by First World War advances in aeroplane engineering and aerial reconnaissance, they spotted an opportunity to make a business out of aerial photography, at a time when it was an untried, untested and a dangerous venture.
Janet Owen, chief executive officer of Hampshire Cultural Trust, said:
"This is an extraordinary exhibition showing the history and landscape of our county and country from another angle. We're proud to bring this historically important exhibition to Eastleigh."
Anne Woodward, Archive Exhibitions Manager at Historic England said:
"The Aerofilms Collection embodies all that is exciting about aerial photography and is a well-used and treasured resource. The Historic England Archive looks after a staggering 9 million photographs - taken from the ground as well as the air - that span the history of photography. It is an invaluable resource whether you’re a local historian, conservation specialist or just curious about England’s buildings and landscapes."
