What a plum job! This year, Carswell Gould organised and ran the Miss PSP Southampton Boat Show 2008. Well, what a fantastic day and what a popular event!
After some concentrated field marketing along the south coast, there was a record entry of more than 60 girls and nearly 6,000 votes online, plus lots of positive word-of-mouth.
As the ten finalists found out, this was no ordinary beauty pageant! In addition to helping launch the 2008 PSP Southampton Boat Show (see other News articles here and here), they spent a whole morning carrying out a variety of tasks at stands around the Show. At Hanse, they learnt how to tie a bowline knot - one-handed! At the BMF/RYA stand, they answered a nautical quiz and at the PSP stand, they had a photocall. Moving on to the H2O in association with Calshot Activity Centre, the girls raced canoes in the specially built tank and finally, at the Topper stand, took part in the Design-a-Sail competition. All tasks were marked and put towards a final score.
The catwalk was compered by Lee Cornick, host of the Miss England heats and the five judges acknowledged they had a tricky task on their hands deciding which girl most deserved the crown, marking each on marine knowledge as well as appearance, ability on the catwalk and intelligence. The audience also had a hand in the decision - quite literally, as they raised giant "thumbs up/down" signs for each of the girls as she left the stage.
However, the decision was finally made and when the scores from the morning's tasks were added to the judges' scores and the audience favourite, the winner was announced as 18-year-old Felicity Macnamara, nicknamed "Fizz", from Chandler's Ford. She was crowned by a winning combination of Jo Dixie from PSP and Paul Strzelecki, Chairman of National Boat Shows and joint Chief Executive of Henri Lloyd.
