City College Southampton has collaborated with ABP Town Quay and local environmental regeneration charity, Groundwork South, in the Urban and Coastal Art Competition which aims to bring two quayside containers to life.
The project saw budding Van Goghs and their families come together to create pieces of art at four free summer workshops in Town Quay Marina and Lloyd Recreation Ground, in Marchwood. The winning designs, which were selected from over 40 entries, will now be used to decorate two quayside containers at Town Quay Marina.
Dominic Dalipe, and fellow art students from City College Southampton, will bring the designs to life on the containers in the new year (March-April 2016), under the watchful eye of art tutor, Sudhir Sood.
The project highlights the college’s ethos of hands-on learning and commitment to engaging students with local businesses.
Art tutor at City College Southampton, Sudhir Sood, said:
“This collaborative scheme will provide the students with invaluable real-world experience, while reinforcing our continued partnership with ABP Town Quay. I am thrilled to be part of such an innovative artistic project in Southampton.”
Hayley Sheppard, manager at ABP Town Quay Marina, said:
“We are so excited to be involved with this exciting project and to strengthen our links with City College Southampton.
“We are looking forward to seeing the winning designs brought to life in the new year.”
Dominic, who is taking a level two UAL Diploma in Art and Design at the college, said:
“This was a great opportunity for us and I am very pleased to be involved. It is a good place to start in life.”
Claire Salerno, business development manager at Groundwork, said:
“Groundwork is really pleased to work with such community focused partners. Our aim is to build links enabling the community to become more involved in their local environment, I believe this fun project fulfils that aim."
