As the infamous ‘The Anarchy’ battle from Winchester’s rich historical past is re-enacted on the streets of the city next weekend (9/10 July), children are being invited to a ‘Right Royal Dress Up’ and to battle it out themselves in a fancy dress competition.
The competition, which is taking place on Saturday 9 July, will see children aged up to 13 dress up as one of England's kings, queens, knights, princesses or dukes from ages past, to be in with a chance of winning £30.00 worth of Amazon vouchers.
Weather permitting, the fancy dress judging will begin at 12.45pm outside The Great Hall, Winchester, before prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place at 1.00pm. Entry is free.
The competition is part of 'The Anarchy', an interactive re-enactment of the 12thcentury conflict between the forces of the imprisoned king, Stephen, and his cousin, Empress Matilda. Spectators will be able to follow the event through the streets of Winchester, starting at 10.45am at Winchester Cathedral, moving past the City Museum, the Westgate Museum and finishing at the Great Hall with a performance of a courtroom scene.
The interactive historical experience will allow spectators to witness militia training, weapon displays, battle demonstrations and more, over four sessions from 10.45am-1pm and 2pm-4pm on both Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 July.
'The Anarchy' is part of Royal Blood: The fight for power in Hampshire, Hampshire Cultural Trust’s year-long programme of exhibitions, performances and events, exploring the county’s long and illustrious royal history.
Janet Owen, chief executive of Hampshire Cultural Trust, said:
"Our competition is a light-hearted way for children to not only learn about, but become immersed with history through their own interpretations of old monarchs.
"We hope to encourage lots of budding historians to come and take part, and are really excited to see the costumes."
