CG adventures

Gale force winds, slanting rain and bitterly cold temperatures did little to put off the CG team when Pure Racing invited them on an exhilarating day of sailing in the Solent. It was CG's wettest and windiest challenge to date.

The team behind CG Adventures had been searching for another challenge to conquer after successfully completing the ABP Southampton Half Marathon, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and racing RIBs across the Arctic Circle.

Ed Gould, CG's creative director, said:

There's no challenge too big or too small for CG. As specialists in marine marketing we've always immersed ourselves in the industry. We've raced Bear Grylls across the Solent and taken RIBs to the Arctic Circle so now it was time to turn the competition on ourselves.

Decked out fully in as many layers of waterproofs they could manage, the team boarded Pure Joy, a competitive J109 yacht, at Hamble Point Marina to meet instructors Sarah Rossiter and Alex Gardner. After a quick safety briefing the team were soon put to work and headed out into Southampton Water. There was a job for everyone, including using the sheet to trim the sail, adjusting the halyard and outhaul and of course, navigating.

Force eight winds battered the yacht as it made its way across the Solent towards Cowes. Sailing upwind meant the team got to practice tacking many times in order to turn the boat across the wind.

CG arrived at Cowes Yacht Haven cold, drenched and in some cases green in the face but full of adrenaline, ready for the return trip. Instructors Sarah and Alex were patient, informative and assuaged any fears the team had with their great sense of humour. They promised a smoother afternoon on the water on the way back to Hamble and indeed it was, as the sun came out and the winds died down to a more pleasant 15 knots.

There was no time for sunbathing however as Pure Racing taught CG how to raise the jib sail and covered manoeuvres such as tacking once again, clearing the shallow area of the sandbar Bramble Bank.

Laura Downton, PR account manager, said:

We had an absolutely brilliant day with Pure Racing and we can't wait to get out on the water again. Sarah and Alex were brilliant and we can't recommend it enough. Who knows, maybe there will be a CG sailing team in the very near future!
