CG’s studio designers and web programmers headed to Portsmouth for a conference on the cutting edge of web design and development.

The Heart and Sole conference, which brings web design and development professionals together to share experience, was held for the first time at The Spinnaker Tower.

CG's Tom McLean said: “What we collectively agreed at the conference was that digital is only going to get bigger, better and more important for us as time goes on. Therefore, the possibilities of what we can produce our endless. It’s very exciting when you think about it in that way.”

CG's Graham Woods added: "As a designer, today’s digital arena opens up all kinds of possibilities with user experience, access of information, downloads, social media and video. With all this rich content the single most important role for any good designer is communicating these messages in a clear and concise way.

“This becomes more apparent when designing for the mobile market, where display and access of information takes precedent over graphics and imagery, but this does not mean that design or creativity takes a back seat, it still has to work and engage like any other piece of design."

Tom and the rest of the team will be using ideas and inspiration they gained at the conference in their work for CG’s clients.

Here’s a rundown of what they learnt and how they’ll be putting it into action:

1. Online video is becoming easier to implement across browsers and platforms, which means it’s becoming a more and more valuable marketing tool.

CG’s Rob McCann says: “Using http://vid.ly we're able to easily create HTML5 video that'll work in browsers like Firefox, Internet Explorer and webkit-based browsers like Chrome, Safari and iPhones. Vid.ly lets us create a single link for all of these, which greatly speeds up the deployment of projects, ultimately increasing our productivity and lowering clients’ costs.”

2. The latest and greatest coding languages (HTML5, CSS3 etc) can and should be used to solve clients’ problems rather than just as fancy showcases for the technology with no practical application.

Rob says: “We're currently working on some big web projects which will put some of these cutting-edge technologies to a practical use. Heart and Sole explained use of the History API but we're also working on technologies like Geolocation too. All these technologies are designed to make user experience better and ultimately improve the user's impression of the company they're looking up.”

3. Mobile web is also becoming increasingly popular and the emphasis on mobile sites is for less image-heavy, fancy pages and more focus on the copy and content.

Rob says: “Bearing this in mind, a dedicated mobile site is worth investing in so that users don't have to wait an eternity for frivolous effects/graphics to download before they can access the information. We’re able to create fast, efficient and hard-working mobile sites and apps for our clients now.”
