CARSWELL Gould's Tom McLean and Laura Downton put on their best Simon Cowell and Dannii Minogue impressions last week as they judged a battle of the bands competition in Southampton.
Tom, Carswell Gould's designer, and Laura, PR account executive, were on the judging panel as Regents Park Community College hosted an inter-school battle of the bands. It was a first for Laura being on the other side of the judging table as she appeared on The X Factor in 2007, facing Simon Cowell aka 'Mr Nasty' for real.
Acts of all ages and genres pitted their musical skills against one another during the battle of the bands, which was organised by Southampton and Fareham Chamber of Commerce. But in the end there could only be one winner and Laura and Tom, along with other judges from local band, Greenish Day, chose Get Dexter to take the crown.
Tom said: "All the bands were great and it was good to see the kids were learning that what you invest in practise, you get back when you perform your song well. Get Dexter stood out in particular because they were incredibly well-rehearsed and proved that with hard work, you can go far."
Laura added: "It was nice being on the other side of it for once and judging rather than being judged! I think events like this are great for teenagers. Businesses need to support schools and their pupils because they are the workers of tomorrow. It's important for companies to get involved with schools any way they can - whether it's going in to give talks, offering work experience or even judging talent shows like this."
