SOUTHAMPTON marketing and communications agency, Carswell Gould, is showing that firms can still recruit during the recession, as long as they "hire smart". The integrated agency has broadened its PR offering with the recruitment of a video journalism specialist, with the aim of giving clients more for their money.

Steve Smith joins the city centre agency from the Bournemouth Daily Echo, where he was a senior reporter. Before that he worked at the Hampshire Chronicle, where he was the first reporter to be trained as a video journalist and led the development of the paper's online video offering. Steve, who is also well-versed with online news reporting and has spent time in a radio newsroom, studied Multimedia Journalism at Bournemouth University, covering print, TV, radio and online skills. He has full NCE status after further training with the National Council for the Training of Journalists. His appointment means Carswell Gould's PR team is now predominantly made up of ex-news reporters.

Steve, 25, said: "I'm really excited about this new challenge and bringing an extra dimension to Carswell Gould's integrated marketing service. In today's digital multimedia world, the ability to promote yourself through a variety of media is key to companies and I hope to help our clients gain extra coverage through video, as well as in print."

Carswell Gould's Creative Director, Ed Gould, said: "We're showing that if companies 'hire-smart' during these tough times, they can add a lot of value to what they offer clients without increasing cost. With Steve on our team, we really are giving our clients more for their money.

"Having a PR team made up of journalists is a real winner for our clients. Steve has all the skills of a great PR executive, along with a strong nose for news and the sort of media contacts that most supposed PR pros could only dream of. Having him on board, particularly considering his video journalism skills, will be of real benefit and our clients will reap the rewards. Who better to get you on TV, online and in the press than CG's mix of marketing, creative and journalism experts?"

Carswell Gould has also taken on a new Account Executive in the form of Alex Parvin. Alex, 22, graduated from Royal Holloway in London earlier this year, where she achieved a first class degree in Business Management. Alex will be key in developing internal systems to increase efficiency within the integrated marketing agency.

Like Steve, Alex follows the ethos that everyone at CG is a multi-tasker. Everyone gets involved with all aspects of what the agency does to give clients an approach that looks at every angle.
