Young people in Southampton and the New Forest are being encouraged to get arty this summer in a bid to brighten up the shore side.
ABP Southampton is throwing down the gauntlet and encouraging local children to submit their best designs to brighten up a pair of quayside containers that are currently based at Town Quay Marina and will use the best images to decorate the units.
ABP, which owns the city’s port and Town Quay Marina, is working with environmental regeneration charity, Groundwork South, to launch The Urban and Coastal Art Competition project.
The competition will see budding Van Goghs come together to create pieces of art, across a range of styles and mediums, at a number of free summer workshops. Children of all ages and abilities are urged to take part, from early years to secondary school leavers, and families are welcome to join in the fun free-of-charge too.
The creations, which can be entered into one of two titles - The Elements and Power of the Sea - will then be entered into a competition where the winning design, judged by an independent panel, will be interpreted by a local artist who will bring the art to life on the containers.
Once the top entries have been selected, the shortlisted pieces will be displayed at an exhibition at Town Quay Marina later this year. The lucky winners will not only see the transformed container units first-hand, they will also win prizes such as art material vouchers or a family day-out, with spending money included.
Claire Salerno, business development manager at Groundwork South, said: “We recognise ABP as a major employer in Southampton, who have a fantastic, positive approach to working with the local community. ABP invest locally by not only providing thousands of jobs, but also with its community engagement activities. We are thrilled to be collaborating with them for this exciting, brand-new project.”
Katie Osman, manager of Town Quay Marina, said: “We are proud to collaborate with Groundwork and really look forward to seeing the transformed container units brightening up the quay.”
