CG has created a brand new tracking widget which allows people to get closer to events such as sailing challenges, races and adventures, through the internet.
The web team has this week unveiled GPSocial, which will be used for the first time next week to help web users follow boats taking part in the GORE-TEX® Arctic Challenge.
The web widget links into GPS beacons, which can be placed in a car, on a boat or even in a rucksack on a person.
These GPS beacons are in turn tied into the Iridium Satellite network. By linking directly to the beacons, the widget is able to display updates of the carrier’s location on a map.
Next week the GPSocial widget will be connected to beacons on the two RIBS taking part in the GORE-TEX® Arctic Challenge.
It means those logging onto the challenge website will be able to get much closer to the action and actually see where the RIBs are as they traverse from Scotland to the Arctic Circle.
The map at www.ribstothelimit.com starts by displaying a projected course; the course that the adventurers intend on taking.
As the journey begins, the map will display a red line and a blue line indicating each of the boats' locations. The map also shows markers where tweets, images and video are taken.
While GPSocial was created in the first instance for the GORE-TEX® Arctic Challenge, it could be used for many other adventures and purposes in the future.
It can be embedded into any web page online with just a couple of lines of code and is expandable, which will allow other expeditions to run their own GPSocial widget using their own unique API key.
Rob McCann, web developer, said: “We’ve had great fun creating the widget, which is going to be of huge benefit to the GORE-TEX® Arctic Challenge.
The whole aim of the adventure is to promote RIBs to a wider audience and by allowing them to track the RIBs online, it will help to do that and bring the excitement of the adventure into their home, office or even onto their smartphone.”
